In 2016, as a result of a generous $1 million donation by Jean Buchanan (’76), Avila University was able to deepen its commitment to peacebuilding in the community by establishing the Buchanan Initiative for Peace and Nonviolence (BIPN). Governed by an advisory board and program coordinator, BIPN works closely with Avila University’s CSJ Center for Heritage, Spirituality and Service and the Center for Global Studies and Social Justice.

In addition to sponsoring events that promote peace, nonviolent action, and social justice, BIPN aims to cultivate a peacebuilding culture on campus in three ways: (1) introducing peacebuilding concepts into the First Year Seminar course curriculum; (2) bringing a global perspective of activism to the Avila community by hosting an Activist-in-Residence every fall semester; and (3) co-hosting the annual Greater Kansas City Peacebuilding and Nonviolence Conference with our academic partners around the city.
